Border official says Dem lawmaker upset about masked ICE agents in Chicago 'needs help'

An Illinois senator was recently captured on video, visibly upset, as she confronted an ICE agent near Chicago. State Senator Karina Villa was trying to prevent the agent from performing duties, expressing that the situation was one of urgent concern for her community.

In a footage from early Monday, Villa, dressed in red pants and high heels, implored nearby residents to “stay in your car” while driving toward the scene in West Chicago. “This is my town!” she exclaimed, clearly emotional, as she approached the agent. “This is my city!”

She continued to demand that the agent remove his mask, raising her voice several times before delivering a passionate warning in Spanish for those nearby to hear.

Gregory Bovino, the head of U.S. Customs and Border Patrol operations in Chicago, described her behavior as “unhinged” during an interview. He suggested that Villa might need assistance after witnessing her reactions. He also pointed out that her requests regarding mask-wearing among agents overlooked their necessity for safety, especially given the increase in assaults on federal personnel.

Bovino mentioned, “I think it makes sense that these masks are out there as there’s been a 1,000% increase in assault on federal agents operating like this. There’s a reason for this.”

ICE has criticized elected officials who encourage people to defy the law and disrupt legal operations, expressing concern for public safety.

On Tuesday, it was announced that a significant operation, part of “Operation Midway Blitz,” started targeting undocumented immigrants in the Chicago area. Bovino noted that last week alone saw “hundreds of arrests” made, with expectations for those numbers to continue rising.

When asked whether he would discuss the ICE operations with Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, who has opposed such actions, Bovino quipped that he would be happy to take a walk with the governor to witness firsthand the impact on Chicago and its residents.
