Zohran Mamdani Calls for Cancellation of Charlie Kirk Event
In a recent statement, New York City socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani urged that Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist who was shot last week, be prevented from speaking in New York, labeling him an “extremist.”
The call came in a press release from various local Democrats, including Mamdani, in reaction to an agreement by Motif Studio to host a far-right event on June 17th at Tammany House in Long Island City. The group expressed their disappointment with the venue’s decision to facilitate this event featuring Blexit and Turning Point USA.
“As elected representatives of West Queens, we find it deeply concerning that Motif Studio would provide a platform for views that contradict our values of diversity and inclusion,” their statement read. It criticized the invitation of speakers like Candace Owens and Charlie Kirk, saying it went against what New Yorkers stand for.
The elected official urged Motif Studios to reconsider their commitment and follow the example of another venue that had canceled a similar event after hearing community concerns about bias.
“Hate cannot be tolerated in Queens, New York City, or anywhere else,” the release stated.
Despite the objections, the scheduled event proceeded, and Kirk appeared to confront the protestors attempting to disrupt it.
Republican MP Jake Blumenkrantz remarked that Kirk’s murder was a tragic consequence of exercising free speech. He emphasized that elected officials should reflect on the culture of hate they have allowed to develop.
“Ignoring the efforts to suppress our colleagues and free expression has only fed a hostile climate,” Blumenkrantz said, criticizing the idea of censorship and public shaming in political discourse. He sees this as a threat to the principles of free speech.
The tragic incident surrounding Kirk’s death has reignited discussions on free speech across the U.S., with Blumenkrantz claiming Mamdani’s stance on free speech is contradictory. He pointed out the double standard in Mamdani’s approach to advocacy, arguing that some speech he defends, often seen as inciteful, undermines democracy.
Blumenkrantz urged New Yorkers to consider what it means to have someone like Mamdani in a position of power, questioning the implications for free expression in the city.
Mamdani, responding to the shooting, described the violence as “terrifying” and asserted that “political violence has no place in our country.” He conveyed these sentiments while addressing supporters, emphasizing the urgent need to tackle gun violence.
