Walz responds to Trump’s comments about the deceased Minnesota lawmaker: “No compassion”

Walz on Trump remarks about slain Minnesota lawmaker: 'No compassion'

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized President Trump for his lack of compassion in responding to the tragic death of state legislator Melissa Hortman, who was shot at home along with her husband, Mark.

“There’s no compassion, no empathy from this guy. It feels like there’s no real governance across the country,” Walz stated during his appearance on MSNBC’s “Briefing” on Tuesday.

The governor referred to Hortman’s death as a result of “horrific acts of political violence and exceptional human loss,” emphasizing the impact on families and communities.

In June, Hortman’s residence was targeted by shooters disguised as police officers in what was described as a “politically motivated” attack.

On Monday, Trump seemed unaware of Hortman’s identity when asked why a flag hadn’t been lowered to half-staff in her honor, even after a question about the shooting of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk.

This query has sparked widespread discussion on social media regarding the motives behind Kirk’s murder.

CBS News’ chief White House correspondent, Nancy Cordes, asked Trump, “Given all the ways this White House has honored Charlie Kirk, don’t you think it’s appropriate to lower the flag for Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman?”

Trump responded, “I’m not familiar with you. Who?”

Just months ago, the president did express sorrow over Hortman’s death, writing about how “this kind of horrifying violence is not tolerated in the United States” and wishing well for the people of Minnesota.

Despite this, he did not reach out to Walz directly to discuss the matter.

Instead, Trump opted not to engage with the “smashed” governor, a Democratic vice-presidential candidate for the 2024 election.

A spokesperson for Walz later stated, “It’s about supporting the Hortman family, the Hoffman family, and Minnesota, and the governor’s focus remains on healing for all three.”

As the governor campaigns for another term, he reiterated his commitment to these goals.

He described Hortman as “a decent person and perhaps one of the most effective lawmakers I’ve ever worked with.”

He added, “Minnesota has made significant progress under his leadership, and it’s hard to convey the depth of respect we have for him,” during a conversation with host Jen Psaki.

Walz emphasized the importance of addressing concerns about political violence in today’s society.
