FCC Chairman Threatens Action Against Jimmy Kimmel and ABC
FCC Chairman Brendan Kerr issued a warning on Wednesday regarding late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, in light of Kimmel’s remark suggesting that a suspect in the attempted killing of Charlie Kirk might be affiliated with the “Maga Gang.”
Kimmel, who hosts “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” commented that the 22-year-old suspect, Tyler Robinson, claimed he wasn’t connected to the “Maga,” calling it a “hit” with “New Law.”
Kimmel expressed his frustration over the portrayal of the suspect, noting, “We’re struggling with some new lows over the weekend, desperately trying to label this kid who attempted to kill Charlie Kirk as anything but one of them. It’s all an effort to gain political points from this.”
He also took a jab at former President Donald Trump’s reaction to the situation, saying it reflected more of a child’s response than that of an adult grieving the loss of a friend.
Kerr, however, did not appreciate Kimmel’s comments. He described Kimmel’s remarks as “really ill” and warned that they could result in an immediate suspension or even jeopardize ABC’s broadcasting license.
“The FCC has strong cases that will hold ABC, Disney, and Kimmel accountable,” Kerr remarked, indicating that this was a serious issue for Disney.
He hinted at a potential path toward Kimmel’s suspension and noted that there were calls for Kimmel’s termination. Kerr pointed out that the FCC could argue that Kimmel’s comments represent an effort to mislead the public on a significant matter.
“Disney needs to see changes, but the individual license stations need to make their voices heard. It’s clear that the current situation isn’t acceptable,” Kerr concluded.
