Opinion on Charlie Kirk’s Legacy

New York Times columnist Ezra Klein recently commented on the backlash that Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk faced, particularly during a podcast discussion. Klein suggested that Kirk was practicing politics the right way, particularly in engaging with differing viewpoints.

Following the untimely death of Kirk at a campus event at Utah Valley University on September 10, FBI officials and Utah Governor Spencer Cox indicated that the assailant might have been motivated by leftist ideology.

In a piece published the day after the incident, Klein praised Kirk for his dedication to political discourse, highlighting that Kirk wasn’t afraid to converse with those who opposed him. He characterized Kirk as one of the most persuasive figures of his time, emphasizing the importance of engagement.

Klein reflected further on this topic during his podcast, commenting on the polarized reactions to his earlier writings about Kirk. “I’ve shared various works over the years and I can’t say I fully anticipated the intensity of the responses, especially from those on the right,” he admitted, noting the frustration some felt towards his perspective.

While acknowledging Kirk’s contributions, Klein also pointed out the need to critique political violence without trying to gloss over the complexities of individuals like Kirk. He expressed an increased sense of empathy towards Kirk in light of recent events.

“I find myself saddened for him—not because of any personal ties but because I see a sense of shared humanity,” Klein shared. “He was taken down for participating in our political landscape.”

In an effort to build bridges, Klein hosted a conversation with Ben Shapiro, co-founder of the Daily Wire, emphasizing the necessity of coexisting even amid disagreements. “We must believe in our convictions while also living alongside those we oppose,” Klein concluded.
