Florida Investigates Educators Over Comments on Charlie Kirk’s Death

The Florida State Board of Education, led by Anastasios Kamoutsas, is launching an investigation into educators who expressed approval of the death of Turning Point USA CEO, Charlie Kirk. This initiative was shared in a letter sent to school principals on Thursday.

In the letter, Kamoutsas indicated that he would look into all educators who have engaged in what he described as “sleazy and sanctionable behavior.” He pointed out that he’s been alerted to inappropriate comments made on social media regarding Kirk’s assassination, emphasizing that these remarks do not represent the majority of dedicated teachers in Florida.

“These comments have come to my attention, and they certainly fall short of the professional standards we expect,” he commented. “I plan to survey all educators who made such remarks.”

According to Kamoutsas, the state law gives the Education Practices Board the authority to suspend a teacher’s license for inappropriate conduct. So far, investigations into social media messages have begun with four teachers in Osceola County. One educator in Kissimmee noted, “I’m proud that you’re taking this for your team,” referring to the actions taken.

Kamoutsas acknowledged the right to free speech but stressed that these freedoms do not exempt educators from their professional responsibilities. He warned that personal opinions could jeopardize the trust students and families place in educators.

“While educators possess the right to express their views, these should not extend beyond their professional duties. If their opinions lead to discomfort among students or families, it could breach Rule 6A10.081,” he explained.
