George Soros Contributes to Gavin Newsom’s Redistricting Campaign
Billionaire donor George Soros has reportedly given $10 million to support California Governor Gavin Newsom’s voting initiative, as per The New York Times.
Known for his financial backing of various left-leaning campaigns, Soros made a significant contribution to Newsom’s efforts aimed at restructuring the state’s legislative districts. This initiative, designed to counter Republican strongholds in states like Texas, is part of a broader $70 million campaign launched by Newsom, dubbed Proposal 50.
Soros, who established the Open Society Foundations and has overseen a substantial nonprofit worth about $25 billion, saw his son, Alex, take over as chair of the board in 2022.
According to The Times, this funding bolsters Newsom’s financial backing for what he describes as “emergency measures” in response to the political maneuvers occurring in Texas. Newsom emphasized the need for these changes, stating earlier this August, “We’re going to override what’s happening in Texas.”
As Republican legislators in Texas prepared to vote on a new congressional map ahead of the mid-2026 elections, many fled to liberal states such as Illinois and Massachusetts, seeking refuge from the impending changes.
At an August press conference, Newsom underscored his commitment to transparency and public support, asserting, “We’re doing this temporarily and with the consent of the people.” Indeed, his approach differs fundamentally from what he characterizes as the more opaque processes undertaken by Texas lawmakers.
In contrast, former President Trump has claimed that the push for redistricting in California was a misguided effort, voicing his criticism during an interview with CNBC. He mentioned the prospect of gaining five seats in Texas, citing the importance of Republican strategies in that state.
Despite the differing opinions, it’s clear that Soros’ involvement represents a significant investment in shaping California’s electoral landscape, and the political tension surrounding these initiatives continues to evolve.
California Republicans have expressed their concerns over these developments, urging caution as they navigate the implications of such re-zoning efforts. Comments from Trump reflect a sentiment that underscores the broader divisive nature of this political climate.
Efforts to solicit responses from both the Open Society Foundations and Newsom’s office have so far gone unanswered.
