Serving the public, not seizing presidential authority

I recently took office after a special election, which followed the signing of what people have called the “big, beautiful bill.” Voter engagement in Virginia surprised many, with a significant turnout. While special elections can be unpredictable, there are lessons to be gleaned from this one.

In Northern Virginia and the DC area, we’re experiencing firsthand the impact of President Trump’s economic strategies. In my community, it’s hard to find someone who hasn’t been affected by job losses linked to the administration’s reckless policies and Congressional decisions.

If we don’t change our approach, what we’re facing in Northern Virginia will soon echo across the country. Families everywhere are acutely aware of those who lost jobs due to drastic budget cuts, erratic tariffs, or the rising costs of everyday essentials like food, rent, and medication.

So, what steps can Congress take to stabilize the situation? A good start would be to rein in government agencies and reassert Congressional authority. On my first day, I introduced the Sweep Enforcement Restructuring Act. This legislation necessitates that the President seeks Congressional approval before making significant cuts, reorganizations, or closings within federal agencies.

Instead of allowing one person and his wealthy supporters to dictate major changes, Congress should have the final say in significant federal reorganization efforts. It’s too risky for governance to rest in the hands of a single individual making arbitrary decisions. We owe it to the American people to uphold our institutions and ensure the government operates in their favor, not against them.

This proposed bill is straightforward. Any budget cuts over 10%, workforce reductions exceeding 5%, or elimination of essential government functions need to be approved by Congress. This promotes transparency, safeguards employees, and values the dedicated civil servants who have served Americans for generations.

Federal workers are not just anonymous bureaucrats. They include scientists tackling climate issues, nurses helping veterans, and air traffic controllers ensuring our skies are safe. Their work is crucial – it affects the health, safety, and overall well-being of every American.

Even though Elon Musk is no longer in the White House, the dangers of misguided policies continue to impact not only government employees but also those who rely on them. Federal workers are embedded in communities throughout the country, not just in the DC area. Attacking them means threatening the very fabric of American life – schools, hospitals, and local businesses all depend on a functional government.

Services provided by the federal government should be merit-based, not driven by a political agenda. If Trump and his wealthy allies believe they can usurp our government for their personal gain, they are miscalculating.

This issue transcends party lines. It’s fundamentally about accountability, democracy, and the integrity of our government. Every citizen deserves a government that serves their interests rather than being manipulated for political agendas. When federal employees can work free from political retaliation, it benefits everyone, from airports to laboratories, and from local hospitals to border stations. If the President wishes to make changes, he should consult Congress and articulate his reasoning.
