Damon Lindelof, known for creating popular series like Lost, expressed strong discontent regarding the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel from ABC/Disney, threatening to withdraw his support if Kimmel isn’t reinstated.
Lindelof took to Instagram to share his long-standing friendship with Kimmel, describing him as “kind,” “compassionate,” and someone who “loves his country.”
However, he didn’t shy away from expressing his anger over Kimmel’s recent suspension.
“I was shocked, saddened, and angry about yesterday’s suspension and I hope for a quick resolution,” Lindelof stated.
He went on to make a pointed comment to his employer, suggesting that if they were trying to move forward without considering his remarks, they needed to reconsider their stance on humor versus hate speech. “I think you still don’t understand what you’re doing,” he added.
Kimmel’s recent financial losses were compounded when his show was interrupted by major ABC affiliates, including Sinclair Media and Nexstar, after he commented that the murderer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was likely a MAGA supporter.
This incident sparked significant backlash within certain circles, particularly from those who defend free speech while often criticizing it from a conservative perspective over the past couple of decades.
Former Late Show host David Letterman accused ABC/Disney of bowing to what he termed an “authoritarian regime” by suspending Kimmel. Meanwhile, the Writer’s Guild of America protested the suspension outside an ABC/Disney facility, and former President Obama expressed his outrage over what he described as “cancel culture” affecting Kimmel’s show.
