Robin Wright, at 59, recently expressed that fans of the classic 1987 film, The Princess Bride, shouldn’t expect a sequel anytime soon.
Reflecting on a Zoom call that took place after the film marked its 30th anniversary, she noted, “A few of us were asked if we would be interested in doing a sequel, and I joked, ‘Well, a lot of us would be in wheelchairs.’ So, it’s probably not going to happen,” she said during an interview released on Friday.
The cherished family comedy will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2027.
Based on William Goldman’s novel, The Princess Bride weaves a fairy tale about Princess Buttercup and her true love, Westley, played by Cary Elwes.
Wright reminisces about working with her co-stars, including Billy Crystal, Mandy Patinkin, and Wallace Shawn.
“We had such a blast filming. It was like a big family reunion,” she shared. “Cary and I, along with Rob Reiner and the others, pretty much took over the hotel we were staying at. We bonded over music and meals.”
Although she was 21 during filming, she acknowledges her upcoming 60th birthday but feels it’s not quite the end of the road. “Turning 50 felt like a turning point for me, but it didn’t change who I am,” she remarked.
Wright, who also gained fame from her role in Forrest Gump, remains a believer in true love. “I like to consider myself romantic. Relationships can be tough, but I think we always bounce back,” she noted.
She was previously married to Dane Witherspoon and Sean Penn, with whom she shares two children, Dylan and Hopper. Wright married Clement Giraudet from 2018 to 2022. While open to love again, she has set some boundaries. “I don’t want to deal with doubt or jealousy anymore. Those feelings from my twenties just aren’t for me,” she explained.
Interestingly, her children, who once swore they wouldn’t follow in their parents’ footsteps, are now making strides in acting. “They’ve been on film sets most of their lives, and at a young age, they said they’d never be actors. But here we are; they’re both talented actors,” she shared.
In fact, Wright’s daughter Dylan collaborated with her father, whereas Hopper and Wright worked together on a project called Devil’s Peak. “It was a bit awkward at first, but it turned out to feel pretty natural,” she reflected.
Though Wright doesn’t see a future for a Princess Bride reboot, the film still resonates with its cast years later. Recently, Patinkin, who played the memorable Inigo, revealed he often recites his lines from the film. “I still feel a connection to that character. It’s hard to explain how that feels,” he shared, reminiscing about his quest for revenge in the film.
