Looks like McJones is gearing up for another opportunity in San Francisco.
The 49ers have announced that quarterback Brock Purdy, who’s dealing with toe injuries, is “very unlikely” to play against the Cardinals this Sunday. Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Jones will be the starter for the second consecutive time.
Purdy had been practicing this week, albeit with limited capabilities, as he hoped to contribute in a pivotal matchup between two undefeated teams.
Shanahan hasn’t completely ruled out Purdy. He mentioned that there’s a chance he could serve as Jones’ backup or even be the emergency third-string quarterback. “I think he made significant progress and had a solid week,” Shanahan noted. “We’ll see how he feels tomorrow.”
Previously, Shanahan suggested that Purdy might have a shot at playing in the home opener this Sunday.
Purdy missed last week’s 26-21 victory over the New Orleans Saints. In that game, Jones stepped in as the starting quarterback and completed 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns, marking an impressive debut for San Francisco.
Earlier this season, Purdy had been dealing with a toe injury as well as issues with his left shoulder when he led the team to victory over the Seahawks, throwing 26 for 35 with 277 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Unfortunately, Purdy isn’t the only key player facing injuries this season. Star tight end George Kittle is dealing with a hamstring injury, and wide receiver Jauan Jennings is uncertain for Sunday’s game due to ankle and calf issues.
