Mistakes hurt Rutgers in difficult home defeat to Iowa

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Rutgers Reflects on Tough Loss Against Iowa

Friday night’s 38-28 defeat against Iowa might stick in Rutgers’ memory as a self-inflicted loss. With a record crowd of 55,942 at Shi Stadium, the Scarlet Knights had a significant opportunity to shine under Greg Schiano, but they stumbled repeatedly.

While holding a narrow 28-24 lead, late defensive penalties proved to be costly. In a pivotal moment during the fourth quarter, Rutgers seemed to make a critical stop, forcing an incomplete pass from Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski on third and eight at the 33-yard line.

Instead of punting, Iowa continued their drive and eventually scored the game-winning touchdown with 5:39 remaining.

Shortly after, Jaxon Rexroth caught a touchdown pass from Athan Kaliakmanis, further securing Iowa’s advantage.

Rutgers seemed poised for victory early in the game, especially when their offense created challenges for the Hawkeyes. Kaliakmanis ended with 330 passing yards, marking his second consecutive game exceeding 300 yards, while wide receiver Ian Strong, who had a career-best 151 yards, still dealt with injury concerns from Friday’s matchup.

However, costly errors marred Rutgers’ efforts, leading to six penalties for a total of 50 yards. Kicker Jai Patel also struggled, missing two field goals, including a 37-yarder in the second quarter and having a 29-yard attempt blocked in the third.

Fans expecting a low-scoring game were surprised, as the teams combined for 42 points in the first half, trading touchdowns throughout the opening 30 minutes.

The evening opened on a rough note for Rutgers when Kaden Wedgen returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for an early Iowa lead, sending a wave of frustration over the packed crowd. However, the Scarlet Knights responded well. Kaliakmanis orchestrated a six-play, 75-yard drive, capped off by a five-yard touchdown run from Antwan Raymond after a 40-yard passing connection to DT Sheffield.

Rutgers eventually took the night’s first lead following a major defensive stand against Iowa, with Kaliakmanis leading a successful drive that included rushing for the team’s first touchdown.

Then, the shootout truly kicked off. Kamali Moulton rushed for a touchdown, equalizing at 14, only for Kaliakmanis to reclaim the lead for Rutgers at 21-14 shortly after. Gronowski responded with a two-yard rush, tying the game again with eight minutes left in the half.
