On Saturday, former President Donald Trump issued a warning to Afghanistan, which is under Taliban control, regarding the return of Bagram Air Force Base to the U.S. He stated, “If Afghanistan doesn’t bring the people who built it, Bagram’s Air Force Base back to the United States, something bad will happen!!” However, he didn’t specify what repercussions might occur.
Trump’s comments came just a few days after he indicated that the U.S. administration was working to regain the airfield from the Taliban. While speaking alongside British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer, he criticized the Biden administration’s approach to Afghanistan, mentioning “a little broken news.” He emphasized their intention to reclaim the base, highlighting that “they need things from us.” Again, he kept details about what the Taliban needed vague.
Trump pointed out that the location of the Bagram base is strategic due to its proximity to China, which, he mentioned, is an hour away from places where nuclear weapons are manufactured. He then told reporters that they wanted the base back as soon as possible, adding, “If they don’t do that, you’ll know what I’m trying to do.”
The Taliban took control of Afghanistan following the U.S. military withdrawal in 2021, seizing Bagram Airfield, which was built by Soviet forces in the 1950s. On July 1, 2021, U.S. forces quietly vacated the base, leaving it to the Afghan government. The Taliban officially gained control of the airfield in August 2021, almost simultaneously with the fall of Kabul.
Earlier this year, Adam Bohler, the U.S. hostage envoy, held discussions with Taliban officials in Kabul about various matters, including the release of hostage George Grezman, marking the first in-person meeting since the withdrawal. In March 2020, the process to pull U.S. troops began under Trump’s administration, a decision that ultimately allowed the Taliban to gain significant ground leading up to the withdrawal.
