Memorial Gathering for Charlie Kirk in Glendale, Arizona

On the anniversary of Charlie Kirk, supporters shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation how much the founder of Turning Point USA influenced their lives.

Thousands gathered outside Arizona State Farm Stadium on Saturday night, with an even larger crowd forming by early Sunday morning. Attendees included students from Grand Canyon University (GCU), who discussed Kirk’s legacy. Riley, a student from Wisconsin, mentioned how Kirk inspired her to attend GCU. She felt connected with other students on campus. “He really cared about the younger generation,” she said. “Our school absolutely loves him. Our Turning Point chapter is also here.”

Before joining GCU’s TPUSA chapter, Riley had been listening to Kirk in the lead-up to the 2024 election. Although she views herself as more moderate, she found clarity in her vote for President Donald Trump after wrestling with questions related to the election. “I just wanted to make sure I knew the facts before voting, but it was all pretty confusing,” Riley explained. “Charlie really clarified things for me, and it was inspiring to see how he treated others with respect.”

When asked what message she would share about Kirk, Riley stated, “He believed that your voice should never fade away. It’s about keeping his legacy alive.” She emphasized the importance of continuing the movement he started. “He ignited a fire in so many of us, and we must carry that forward.”

Following Kirk’s passing, many friends and family members have discussed his strong faith. Just days after his death, his wife, Erica Kirk, highlighted his deep love for God, which was central to his outreach to students.

Another GCU student, Claire from Washington, expressed her desire to honor Kirk’s mission. “His commitment to college students is incredibly inspiring,” she told DCNF. “It’s wonderful to see so many people coming together in his memory.”

Claire believes this moment is significant, stating, “It feels historic, like a turning point for our generation and our country.” She feels it’s an important time for everyone involved.

Although he wasn’t actively involved with TPUSA on campus, Claire noted that Kirk’s death has caused many to reconsider their engagement.

Kirk rose to prominence by addressing students on U.S. university campuses, often engaging with liberal students on various hot-button issues including trans rights, abortion, and women’s sports. Some, including Vice President JD Vance, have pointed out how Kirk’s efforts during the presidential election were pivotal for the Republican party.

A participant from Michigan named Mark made a special trip to attend the memorial. He expressed that Kirk created a turning point in the nation. “It’s pretty emotional being here,” Mark shared, his voice filled with emotion. “It’s heartening to see so many people who share great faith and patriotism.”

Another attendee, who traveled for the services, recalled meeting Kirk early in TPUSA’s formation. Lawrence Rigas from Chicago reminisced about discussing fundraising for child psychologists at local schools with Kirk and spoke fondly of their conversations. “Legendary figures don’t die,” Rigas asserted. “Charlie is reshaping America now.”

As participants shared memories of Kirk throughout the day, there was a feeling of hope for the future of TPUSA. The organization recently noted a surge in interest, stating that “we received over 62,000 requests from high school and university students across the country wanting to start a chapter or get involved.”
