Cubs’ Matt Shaw Attends Memorial Service in Arizona
Cubs infielder Matt Shaw was away from the team on Sunday to attend a memorial service for Charlie Kirk in Arizona, just like the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs didn’t officially confirm that Shaw was there for Kirk’s service; however, manager Craig Counsell stated that Shaw had informed the media he was attending a friend’s funeral.
“Matt Shaw was not available today,” Counsell said. “He attended a friend’s funeral.”
Shaw, 23, had a close relationship with some conservative influencers. Kirk had even shared a photo at Wrigley Field last month alongside Shaw and another player, Michael Bush. Interestingly, Shaw had been scratched from the lineup on September 10, the very day Kirk was killed on the Utah Valley University campus. Yet, he returned later in the game as a pinch hitter.
During Kirk’s memorial service at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, over 90,000 attendees showed their support.
The Cubs were one of the MLB teams honoring Kirk, calling for an end to “all political violence.” Their message encouraged Americans to unite and promote discussions over differences rather than engage in conflict.
The flag at Wrigley Field was flown at half-staff, a request made by MLB following a presidential declaration. Notably, the New York Yankees also paid tribute to Kirk during their game.
Sadly, on Sunday, Chicago lost 1-0 to Cincinnati, concluding their playoff hopes.
