Washington Monument defaced with blood amid rise in National Mall assaults

Secretary Burgum condemns vandalism targeting National Mall amid new threats

Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum has responded to a worrying trend of vandalism affecting the National Mall, notably the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which has suffered significant damage. He outlined ongoing restoration efforts, the increased security presence, and the arrest of seven individuals linked to these acts. Burgum emphasized that such vandalism represents an assault on national symbols and that those responsible will face severe legal consequences.

On a recent episode of “Fox & Friends Weekend,” Burgum discussed the 350-foot-long cut that was made along the reflecting pool’s industrial rubber liner and the graffiti that included anti-Trump messages. He described these actions as an attack on the nation’s cherished monuments, reiterating his stance on prosecuting the offenders “to the fullest extent of the law.” During this situation, law enforcement has reportedly issued multiple citations and generated 18 police reports related to the incidents.

Furthermore, this vandalism coincided with the Trump administration’s efforts to improve the National Mall in preparation for the 250th-anniversary celebrations. Burgum noted a range of restoration accomplishments, including the rehabilitation of over 50 parks and circles, the restoration of 48 monuments, the reactivation of 22 fountains, and the repair of around 1,700 lights across the area. In light of the recent damage, a fence has been put up around the reflecting pool to safeguard it during the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations, which will be marked by fireworks near the monument.

President Trump also commented on the vandalism, describing the damage as an intentional act against the recently refurbished reflecting pool. He expressed concern over the motivations behind such actions, framing them as reflective of broader attempts to undermine the nation.

Overall, Burgum’s remarks shed light on ongoing combat against vandalism in this pivotal national space and highlight the importance of protecting America’s historical sites.
