Caitlin Clark Exits Game Due to Back Injury
Caitlin Clark’s game came to an unexpected halt early Wednesday morning when the Fever guard was ejected before the fourth quarter in their matchup against the Phoenix Mercury.
The Fever informed that Clark would not return for the remainder of the game, reportedly due to back issues. It’s uncertain when exactly she began to feel discomfort, but it seems she aggravated her back following a foul in the second quarter. Clark left the court with a little over five minutes remaining in the third quarter, and she did not return to play, as noted by the Indianapolis Star.
After her departure, the Mercury managed to edge out a close victory against the Fever, winning 111-109, marking Phoenix’s sixth win of the season.
Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with an impressive 30 points, though Karlea Copper’s strong performance, scoring 28 points, played a crucial role in the Mercury’s win.
This season has seen a lot of discussion about the physical style of play that Clark faces since her WNBA debut in 2024. This conversation reignited in the second quarter when she was fouled while attempting a drive to the basket, resulting in her losing control of the ball.
Video replays revealed that Thomas’ knee made contact near Clark’s groin as she fell, followed by what looked like a punch to her throat. Oddly enough, no foul was called during that play.
Clark has dealt with back issues throughout the season, which has seen her on Indiana’s injury report multiple times. The Fever are set to host the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday for their next game.
