1,800 Spirit Airlines flight attendants will be put on leave before Christmas.

Spirit Airlines has announced that nearly 1,800 flight attendants will be laid off just before the busy Christmas travel period. The airline stated its decision is part of an ongoing restructuring effort aimed at aligning staffing levels with fleet size and anticipated flight schedules.

In a recent announcement, the airline confirmed that these job cuts will take effect on December 1, 2025. This news follows Spirit’s second bankruptcy filing in August, and industry experts are expressing concerns that the airline may not have a viable future.

Spirit’s CEO, Dave Davis, communicated to employees in a memo that the company is reducing its flight schedule by approximately 25%. He mentioned plans to “optimize our network,” which sounds like they’re focusing on what markets actually work. It’s a tough market, after all.

In a related move, the airline previously indicated that it would lay off 270 pilots due to decreased demand during the off-peak season and also demote another 140 pilots in early October.

Amid these changes, Spirit Airlines is attempting to attract customers by promoting fall flight sales, starting at a low price of $44.

The situation brings up a range of emotions for those affected—sadness over job losses and anxiety about financial stability. It’s a real challenge to process these feelings, but acknowledging them is, perhaps, the first step in coping.
