Disney Brings Back Jimmy Kimmel Live Following Controversy
Andrew Corvette, a close associate of Turning Point USA spokesperson Charlie Kirk, has vocalized his disapproval of Disney’s choice to reinstate Jimmy Kimmel on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after Kimmel’s recent comments sparked outrage among some audiences.
On Monday, Disney, the parent company of ABC, announced the show’s revival after a week-long hiatus following a “thoughtful conversation” with Kimmel. The absence of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” began last Wednesday due to Kimmel’s remarks about Turning Point USA, which led to the FCC receiving complaints.
Reports indicate that Disney paused the show after two major affiliate owners pulled Kimmel’s program and Kimmel apparently refused to issue an apology for his statements.
Corvette, who is the executive producer for “Charlie Kirkshaw,” was part of a chorus of those who opposed Disney’s move. He expressed his thoughts on social media, stating, “It’s not surprising they’re going back on air, but it’s a mistake. NextStar and Sinclair don’t have to make the same choices.” Meanwhile, some liberals took to social media to celebrate the decision, calling for boycotts of Disney over recent days.
One television producer tweeted, “Jimmy Kimmel is back on Tuesday night. I think it’s going to take billions for CEOs to challenge fascism.” Gavin Newsom, D-Calif, also chimed in, saying, “Thank you to everyone except @brendancarrfcc. This is a victory for free speech everywhere.” Other activists were quick to note that the public’s voice had a significant impact, with one stating, “Disney and ABC were terrified of the boycott, and they caved.”
Despite the enthusiasm from some for Kimmel’s return, conservative voices were less than pleased. They expressed that this was an instance of government overreach, with one commenter humorously suggesting Kimmel’s situation was indicative of “the worst fascism ever.” Other conservative commentators remarked on Kimmel’s remarks being “not worse, not insensitive” and described his temporary suspension as an overreaction.
In contrast, Kimmel’s team has mentioned they can’t envision a future scenario where the show would face another suspension. As the situation unfolds, the reactions continue to highlight the polarized opinions surrounding free speech and the media.
Before the revival announcement, dozens of protestors demonstrated outside a Disney location in Burbank, California, calling for “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to return. The protests also included gatherings near Kimmel’s studio, expressing their disapproval with signs and chants.
