Historic Worship Services at UNC’s Dean Dome
In a unique event at the University of North Carolina, the Dean Dome, often associated with thrilling sports moments, hosted two significant worship services that attracted hundreds. This marked the first time a church has utilized the renowned venue since it opened in 1986.
Summit Church conducted both morning and afternoon sessions aimed particularly at college students seeking spiritual fulfillment. Remarkably, 376 individuals were baptized in a temporary trough set up outside, all happening under bright, clear skies. JD Greer, the pastor, shared the message of salvation and encouraged everyone—young and old—to engage with the gospel.
Reflecting on the human experience, Greer spoke to the crowd, saying, “Every life felt like a quest to find the work that was missing.” He continued, addressing various pursuits people chase, like social status or relationships, suggesting, “You spent your whole life loving things that don’t love you.” He emphasized that true fulfillment comes from a connection with God, which he referred to as a form of revival.
Greer also paraphrased Augustine, reminding the audience that “Our minds are always restless until we find their rest within you.” He urged attendees to come to Jesus as they are, highlighting that barriers don’t define their worth.
He elaborated, “Christianity is not just a new worldview…it is the power of the empty tomb.” After Greer’s messages, many attendees moved to meet with counselors, including individuals expressing a desire for baptism, influenced by the spirit of the event.
In a message on social media, the church expressed joy, stating, “Heaven is delighted, and so are we! Life has changed forever.” A reminder that moments of change, even in such an unconventional setting, can lead to profound transformations.
