Trump Critiques UN at General Assembly
At the annual UN General Assembly, President Trump used his platform to question the effectiveness of international organizations, expressing frustration over ongoing global conflicts. He suggested that, while world leaders gathered for discussions, substantial actions were missing.
In remarks delivered later, Trump highlighted his efforts to secure US borders and mentioned areas like Israel, Ukraine, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, speaking about the pursuit of global peace. “It’s unfortunate that these critical matters fell to the UN instead of being directly addressed,” he remarked, emphasizing what he sees as the organization’s shortcomings.
“What is the purpose of the UN? It has immense potential but currently seems to be fixated on ineffective declarations,” he continued, saying, “Words alone won’t end wars.”
Trump also directed sharp criticisms at European immigration policies. He warned that “Europe is facing severe challenges,” claiming it has been overwhelmed by illegal immigration. “Both the approach to immigration and misguided energy policies risk Western Europe’s future,” he noted, especially critiquing wind energy initiatives.
He urged European nations to strengthen their borders, arguing for a need to safeguard cultural identities against changing demographics. “Now is the time to end the failed open border experiment,” he insisted.
His comments drew a noteworthy reaction, especially when he stated, “Your country goes to hell.” He has previously accused the UN of facilitating illegal migration into the US and other Western nations.
“Your country is being destroyed,” he said, criticizing the funding practices of the UN that reportedly allocate substantial resources to assist migrants reaching the US. He mentioned, “In 2024, the UN set aside $372 million to support around 624,000 migrants. Just think about that,” arguing that this support indirectly exacerbates the immigration issues facing the US.
Trump’s speech was marked by some technical difficulties. He described a malfunctioning escalator on which he and First Lady Melania Trump traveled and a faulty teleprompter that disrupted his delivery. “All we got from the UN were broken escalators and malfunctioning teleprompters,” he quipped.
Despite his assertive rhetoric, the audience seemed largely unengaged. In light of this, Trump mentioned engaging privately with Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, with plans for a meeting next week. He also expected to connect with Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky among other global leaders.
