Giants Shift to Rookie Quarterback Jackson Darts
When the NFL’s 2025 schedule was revealed, a prominent story was the challenging matchup lineup for the New York Giants this season.
Amidst this narrative was the pivotal decision to let rookie quarterback Jackson Darts start ahead of veteran Russell Wilson.
The Giants are facing the toughest schedule in the league based on their performance last season. They kick off with a series of challenging games, including a home match against the Kansas City Chiefs. It was anyone’s guess when Coach Brian Daboll might feel comfortable enough to put the rookie in at quarterback.
Surprisingly, that moment came sooner than expected.
Following a tough Sunday night loss to the Chiefs, which left the Giants 0-3, Daboll was initially non-committal regarding the quarterback situation when speaking to the media. However, by Tuesday, he made it clear that Darts would be starting when the Giants play at home against the Chargers in week four.
Wilson’s underwhelming performance against the Chiefs likely influenced Daboll’s decision, particularly late in the game.
The Giants were trailing 22-9 with just over two minutes remaining and were positioned at the Kansas City 4-yard line. Under pressure, Wilson first threw the ball out of the end zone.
A penalty for that misstep pushed the Giants back to the 14-yard line. They then faced a challenging third down after a quarterback draw gained only four yards on the previous play.
On fourth down, Wilson overthrew his target once again, admitting afterward that the pass “sailed” when he aimed for Theo Johnson.
He commented, “I was just trying to give him a chance, but the ball sailed.” Wilson finished the game with 18 completions on 32 attempts, totaling 160 yards and two interceptions.
Fans of the Giants are eagerly awaiting the announcement of Darts as the starting quarterback.
Now, with pressure mounting, the Giants are turning to Darts earlier than anticipated. The upcoming schedule remains as unforgiving as originally revealed. After facing the unbeaten Chargers at home, the Giants head to New Orleans to take on the struggling Saints, where Darts might find some breathing room.
Will his debut be successful? The Giants will encounter strong defenses too, including the Philadelphia Eagles and Denver Broncos in the following weeks.
It’s certainly a tough road ahead for a rookie.
Yet, given Wilson’s recent struggles, Daboll’s choice seems inevitable.
