Macron and Trump Clash in New York Over Palestinian Statehood

The tension between French President Emmanuel Macron and former U.S. President Donald Trump has played out not only at the United Nations but also on the streets of New York. Macron recently declared his support for recognizing a Palestinian state, asserting that this action is “essential to peace.” Meanwhile, Trump condemned Hamas’ view of it as a reward for the violence seen, particularly referencing events from October 7th.

During the UN General Assembly, as Macron made his announcement, an unexpected encounter occurred. While trying to cross the street, Macron was halted by New York police due to Trump’s motorcade. An officer told him, “Sorry, President, everything is frozen.” Macron, appearing a bit frustrated, responded, “If you don’t see it, let me cross.” After some back and forth, Macron called Trump directly, and only then was he able to proceed.

In a lighter moment, later on, Macron wandered through the city and encountered a passerby eager for a selfie. After a brief exchange, where one fan even kissed his head, Macron chuckled and remarked, “It’s just a kiss, it’s no harm.”

The French Embassy in the U.S. poked a bit of fun at the situation on social media, saying, “It’s good that our president has each other on the speed dial… If we had to walk NYC between UNGA, this is 110% relevant content.” It seems both leaders create a stir, often in unexpected ways.
