Jimmy Kimmel Returns After Controversy
Jimmy Kimmel, host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” recently claimed he had no plans to discuss the assassination of Charlie Kirk, which led to the suspension of his show.
Tuesday marked Kimmel’s first appearance since Disney announced his return after a nearly week-long break. He was met with a standing ovation and chants of “Jimmy! Jimmy! Jimmy!” from the audience, showing their support.
“If you’re just tuning in, instead of the usual encore of ‘Celebrity Family Feud,’ we have a special report tonight,” Kimmel began, expressing happiness to be back on air.
Kimmel acknowledged the critics—particularly from the right—and his fellow late-night hosts, including Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, and David Letterman, for their endorsements during his hiatus. Notably, he refrained from apologizing for the comments that led to his suspension.
Kimmel expressed uncertainty, saying, “I’ve been told I need to say a lot tonight, but honestly, I’m not sure it’ll change anyone’s mind. If you like me, you do; if you don’t, you probably won’t.” He mentioned posting a supportive message on Instagram regarding Kirk’s family on the day of the incident.
He stated, “I don’t blame any group for the actions of a deeply disturbed individual. It’s the opposite of what I was trying to convey, but I recognize that my timing may have been off.” He then shared thoughts about friends and family who might not heavily align with his political views. “The person who attacked Charlie Kirk doesn’t represent anyone but is an example of a sickness that sees violence as a solution,” he added.
Kimmel also mentioned his mixed feelings about Disney pausing the show after 23 years. “They’ve always supported my right to address important topics, and I’m especially thankful for that,” he said, but he disagreed with the decision to suspend his show, highlighting the discussions he had with executives.
He concluded his monologue with a poignant mention of Erica Kirk, who forgave her husband’s assassin during his funeral. “There were beautiful moments over the weekend. Erica forgives the man who took her husband’s life. I hope that tragedy can lead to something positive,” Kimmel remarked emotionally.
After Kimmel’s comments last Wednesday, Disney chose to suspend the show, as right-wing commentators were labeling the assassin inappropriately. Kimmel criticized the attempts to distance the attacker from the MAGA movement. “We witnessed some distressing lows over the weekend with efforts to rewrite this narrative,” he said.
Following the episode’s airing, Sinclair Broadcasting Group and Nexstar Media Group opted to preempt Kimmel’s show for what they characterized as his “inappropriate comments.”
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Kerr hinted at potential consequences for the show following the backlash. Sinclair and Nexstar are prepared to continue discussions with ABC as Kimmel returns to the airwaves.
Before his comeback, former President Donald Trump criticized Kimmel and ABC, claiming he had been informed that the show was canceled. “I can’t believe ABC employs Jimmy Kimmel, considering his show was supposedly finished!” Trump remarked, expressing doubt about Kimmel’s comedic talent and questioning ABC’s decisions.
