Unauthorized Immigrant Granted US Stay Under Democratic Administration Faces Murder Charges for Infant Sister's Death

Murder Charges Filed Against Illegal Immigrant in Toddler’s Death

An illegal immigrant, allowed to stay in the U.S. under two Democratic administrations, has been charged with murder after allegedly strangling his 8-month-old sister.

On September 17, Leesburg Police arrested Alvaro Mejia Ayala, reportedly after his baby sister was found in critical condition. Although first responders attempted to save her, the infant succumbed to her injuries later that day, as confirmed by Leesburg Police Chief Sea Pilnut.

Mejia Ayala has been recognized as someone who entered the U.S. illegally, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Following his arrest, immigration officials took steps to take him into custody once his criminal proceedings were complete.

Interestingly, Mejia Ayala’s legal troubles have roots dating back to 2016, when he was released by the Obama administration. There’s some ambiguity surrounding whether he was paroled at that time. The Biden administration effectively allowed him to remain in the U.S. illegally by rejecting his immigration case last October, DHS noted.

In a press briefing, Chief Pilnut stated, “Despite the immediate and massive life efforts by first responders and professional healthcare workers, the child succumbed to injuries shortly after midnight this morning. Additional charges, including murder, will be filed following forensic review.” He described the incident as a deliberate act, stressing, “This was not an accident. The child was murdered for intentional conduct.”

Prior to this incident, Mejia Ayala had been arrested for reckless driving in 2024 but was released before federal immigration authorities could step in.

On the day of the tragedy, he reportedly reached out to a friend for a ride and mentioned he was “playing with her sister and might have killed her.” When police arrived, they found the infant unresponsive with a charging cable around her neck.

Mejia Ayala allegedly fled the scene before police arrived but was apprehended a few blocks away a few hours later. Initially charged with felony strangulation, he faces murder charges following the forensic outcomes.

DHS Deputy Secretary Tricia McLaughlin expressed outrage, questioning, “What kind of sick monsters strangle a vulnerable, innocent baby girl with a charging cord?” She underscored a firm stance against criminal illegal immigrants, stating, “President Trump and Secretary Noem were clear. Criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the United States.”
