Desmond Watson’s Size Could Prove Beneficial
Desmond Watson’s weight might now be his key strength.
The Buccaneers brought him back at 464 pounds during the draft process, just before a crucial week.
NFL analyst Warren Sharp suggests that Watson’s role may not be about chasing down ball carriers but more about his potential impact against the Eagles this Sunday.
“Wait, the Bucs just re-signed him this week before the Philadelphia game; is that really happening?” Sharp noted on social media Tuesday morning.
The idea here is that the undefeated Buccaneers might utilize Watson for short yardage plays.
The Tush Push play, made famous in last season’s Super Bowl, has drawn significant criticism for possibly being banned in the league.
However, Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles downplayed the notion of Watson being a countermeasure to the Tush Push strategy.
“I wouldn’t just bring in Watson to stop the Tush Push,” Bowles stated, adding that Watson is “probably not ready” to play this Sunday.
Watson has reportedly slimmed down to 449 pounds over the summer. There were indications that he faced disciplinary issues concerning his weight by the end of training camp.
The team seems satisfied with his current condition, giving him a spot on the practice team.
While primarily a defensive tackle, Watson has also filled in different roles, including fullback, during his time in Florida.
This Sunday, the Buccaneers may find themselves in need of offensive support, especially after losing Mike Evans to a hamstring injury during their victory over the Jets.
Evans is anticipated to be sidelined for several weeks, highlighting the need for a reliable offensive playmaker.
