The Giants’ major quarterback change might not be sufficient to turn things around, according to at least one Hall of Fame quarterback.
On Tuesday, the Giants made the decision to bench their current starter in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart ahead of their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
Kurt Warner, a Hall of Fame quarterback and former leader for the Giants, expressed concerns about the team’s offensive strategy under Coach Brian Daboll. He noted that the issues extend beyond just the players throwing the ball.
Warner stated, “They obviously need to do something. But I want to start with being more creative on offense! I really appreciate Coach Daboll and his creativity, but it seems to be missing in the last few weeks. Quarterback play, especially in the red zone, has been tough!”
He questioned whether the struggles were simply about the players or if it stemmed from the coaching staff’s decisions.
Despite being named the AP Coach of the Year in his first year in 2022, Daboll’s team holds a concerning 18-35-1 record over the past four seasons. After finishing 3-14 last season, the Giants are struggling again this year.
Russell Wilson, a veteran quarterback with a Super Bowl win under his belt, joined the Giants on a one-year deal and was initially named the starter. However, the pressure mounted when the Giants selected Dart in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
This situation is reminiscent of Warner’s experience with the Giants back in 2004 when he was also transitioning to a rookie quarterback, Eli Manning.
Manning took ten games before he became the starter, launching his successful career that included two Super Bowl victories, while Warner successfully revitalized his career with the Arizona Cardinals.
Although Wilson displayed flashes of his former excellence by throwing for 450 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Warner criticized the team’s heavy reliance on long passes, which led to disappointing results overall.
Jaxson Dart, a standout from Ole Miss, has only seen limited action in the NFL, playing a handful of snaps in short-yardage and red zone situations without throwing a pass yet.
This leads to the question of how the Giants’ offensive strategies will evolve with Dart at the helm, but fans will have to wait until Sunday afternoon for any answers.
