A mother in Michigan, Courtney Mims, witnessed a tragic moment during a junior varsity football game when her son, Colton, suffered a spinal injury after another player jumped over him.
In an interview with a local news station, Mims talked about the intense emotions she felt. “When it happened, I just couldn’t hold back. I had to get to him. It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I felt this rush of determination for my son, and I wasn’t even upset or shaken,” she shared.
Colton, aged 15, was playing for Lakeshore High when he found himself involved in a tough blocking situation against a larger opponent from Kalamazoo Central High School. The accident occurred during the third quarter, leading to him being knocked to the ground while the other player leapt over him.
Afterward, Colton was taken to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with two fractures in his vertebrae, marking the end of his season.
His mother later confirmed that Colton had been released from the hospital and returned home. While he is expected to fully recover, there’s some uncertainty about whether he’ll be able to play football again.
“These boys are just kids, only 15 years old. This game means everything to them; it’s their whole world right now,” his mother remarked. “It’s heartbreaking to see him work so hard, only to have someone try to take it all away.”
In response to the incident, Kalamazoo Central reportedly took significant measures regarding the players involved, although specific identities have not been disclosed.
Some teammates reached out to Courtney to express their apologies, which she found touching. She shared her gratitude on social media, saying it brought her to tears. “We are so thankful for the support from our community,” she wrote. “It’s been overwhelming, and we appreciate everyone rallying behind us during this tough time.”
