French Official Critiques Palestinian Recognition Effort

In a recent discussion, a French official expressed concerns that acknowledging a Palestinian state might essentially be a victory for Hamas. He believes that the proposal, which gained traction at the United Nations this week, aims to distance terrorist groups while simultaneously seeking to revive discussions around a two-state solution.

During an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Pascal Confebert, a spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry, dismissed claims that President Emmanuel Macron was positioning himself as an “anti-Trump” figure on the world stage. Confebert pointed out the strong relationship between Macron and Trump, underscoring that despite their differences, their dialogues remain substantial: “The French President and President Trump have a relationship that began during the first Trump administration,” he noted. “They have intense discussions on numerous issues. This is not counter to the Trump administration; quite the opposite—it actually helps.”

Macron’s Initiatives and the UN Summit

Confebert linked the current UN initiative to a broader context of regional normalization, something he supported during Trump’s presidency. He referenced the Abraham Accords, which he claimed brought peace of mind to neighboring Arab countries while strengthening ties with Israel. “So if the Trump administration wishes to pursue this direction, it certainly opens the door for what could be called Abraham 2,” he remarked.

He further explained how the initiative, co-led by France and Saudi Arabia, intertwined the recognition of a Palestinian state with a series of commitments. “This initiative brings all these pieces together,” he mentioned, emphasizing that without such actions, the two-state solution would be in jeopardy.

Trump’s Stance on Palestinian Statehood

In contrast, Trump criticized France and Saudi Arabia’s plans during his own UN address. “Recognizing the Palestinian state today would reward Hamas for its barbaric acts, including those committed on October 7,” he warned, suggesting that such recognition might only exacerbate the conflict.

Responding to Trump, Confebert argued that the resolution adopted at the UN earlier this week was essential in preserving the two-state solution, which he claimed was at serious risk just a year ago. “This is precisely a defeat for Hamas, which opposes the idea of two states,” he asserted. “They desire ‘from the river to the sea,’ making this initiative a direct contradiction to their objectives.”

Macron’s active role on the international stage faced scrutiny, with some suggesting it was a move to bolster his legacy amid domestic challenges. However, when pressed on the matter, the spokesman chose not to comment on the criticisms surrounding Macron’s popularity at home.

Nonetheless, French officials celebrated their ability to garner significant international support, with the July “New York Declaration”—jointly spearheaded by France and Saudi Arabia—receiving backing from 142 nations at the recent assembly. Confebert remarked, “It’s been a lengthy process, but it illustrates that there is an international majority intent on keeping the two-state solution viable.”

On another note, Trump recently commented on Ukraine during the event, stating that with European backing, Ukraine stands ready to reclaim its territory. Confebert welcomed Trump’s declarations, implying that they signal a lack of desire for peace from Putin.
