Ben Saraf: A Rising Star in the NBA
Ben Saraf, one of the youngest players on one of the youngest rosters in NBA history, is not your typical newcomer. Israeli point guards, unlike many others, often bring a wealth of professional experience to the court, even at a young age.
People have been talking about Saraf. It’s surprising how well he has adapted during summer training, drawing praise for his maturity and skills in a game dominated by veterans.
Michael Porter Jr. expressed that the initial transition into the NBA can be overwhelming, especially when faced with players you grew up watching. However, he noted that players like Saraf, who have been in professional settings for longer, present a unique edge. “At just 19, he displays a level of professionalism that’s impressive,” he remarked, underscoring Saraf’s readiness to compete at a high level.
Having turned professional at 16, Saraf has been honing his skills for three seasons with Elitour Netanya, Elitour Killatta, and most recently, Germany’s Latiofferm Ulm. Last season, he participated in over 60 games, helping his team reach the Bundesliga Final and also representing in FIBA competitions.
Reflecting on his experiences, Saraf mentioned that playing in high-pressure playoff situations has greatly benefited his development. “I’ve learned from my last teammates and I feel like I’m growing,” he said. “Even though I’m technically a rookie, I don’t feel that way. It’s just basketball.”
Teammate Nick Claxton complimented Saraf on his skill, noting how Saraf’s game combines physicality with finesse. Saraf himself acknowledged that adapting to the NBA has been a journey, particularly when it comes to the pace and shot selection: “Here, it’s faster, more one-on-one play,” he noted. “In Europe, we focused more on moving the ball and cutting.”
He indicated a keen enthusiasm for the quick tempo and style in the NBA. Saraf described it as invigorating, emphasizing, “If I have an open shot, I’ll take it right away. It’s refreshing to have that fluidity.”
Jordi Fernandez, the Spaniard coach, is not surprised by Saraf’s capabilities. He sees the point guard as someone well-versed in competitive play. “Ben has played significant games at a professional level,” Fernandez remarked, acknowledging that while some players are new to this intensity, Saraf’s experience stands out.
Meanwhile, Day’ron Sharpe has made significant strides since the offseason, with expectations to excel on the offensive end.
