President Trump, during a recent meeting, urged Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamd to “recover” Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar after he made some controversial remarks regarding the recent shooting of Charlie Kirk.
“I met the leader of Somalia, did you know that?” Trump remarked to reporters while in the Oval Office, referencing the country of several Minnesota lawmakers.
“And I suggested that he might want to bring her back, and he responded, ‘I don’t want her.’”
This came after lawmakers directed a number of negative comments toward Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, following an incident where he was shot during a public event in Utah.
In the aftermath, Omar received backlash along with some praise as she condemned Kirk’s “hate rhetoric.”
“There are many voices discussing him, but they are just seeking a civil discussion,” Omar said dismissively in an interview.
“These people are full of nonsense. It’s important to express our anger and sadness,” she continued, later sharing a video on social media where she criticized Democrats and celebrities for “normalizing Kirk,” referring to Trump’s supporters as “decency humans” and “probabilistic terrorists.”
Moreover, Omar reiterated her critical stance during a CNN appearance.
“I’m not going to sit here and be judged for not honoring the legacy this man represents. It should be discarded, and we must move beyond the hatred he expresses daily,” she stated.
South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace attempted to call out Omar for what she termed a celebration of violence, but this proposal was blocked in the House when four Republicans sided with Democrats against it.
Prominent golfer Phil Mickelson also reacted strongly to Omar’s comments, suggesting she should “be sent back” to an East African country.
“Every time Ilhan speaks, it’s filled with negativity, and I genuinely hope she is returned to Somalia soon,” he said in a post, responding to video footage where a left-leaning politician labeled Kirk as “Dr. Frankenstein,” arguing he was “killed by a monster.”
Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old with leftist beliefs, has been charged with aggravated murder for the deaths of two individuals at Utah Valley University.
Omar has not yet provided a response to the comments made about her.
