What we know about the federal judge handling James Comey's case

A federal judge, appointed by former President Joe Biden, is set to oversee the Justice Department’s case against former FBI Director James Comey, who stands accused of lying to Congress.

Judge Michael Nachmanov, from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, has an arrest scheduled for October 9 related to a case involving a significant political network linked to President Donald Trump.

Nachmanov, who previously worked as a public defender, has been characterized by William Shipley, Comey’s lawyer, as possibly not fitting the mold of a “progressive judge.” Shipley, a former federal prosecutor with experience defending January 6 defendants, noted on social media that Nachmanov might be a favorable choice among the judges appointed by Biden in that district.

Comey has denied the allegations, asserting, “I’m not afraid.”

In another case this year against the Trump administration regarding dismissed doctors, Nachmanov supported the administration by allowing a mandated vaccination for the CIA employee, Dr. Terry Adilim, under the Biden administration. This detail was initially reported in a political piece.

Recently, Trump referred to Nachmanov as “Crooked,” a term he often uses for judges controlling civil or criminal cases against him.

Comey is facing accusations for making a false statement to Congress and obstructing justice, charges he has denied through his attorney, Patrick Fitzgerald, who stated that Comey looks forward to his day in court.

Notably, Nachmanov grew up in Virginia and studied at the University of Virginia Law School. He was confirmed as a judge in 2021 with support from all Democrats and three Republicans.
