Hegseth Ridicules Former General for Equating Meeting of Generals with Nazi Loyalty Test

Military Meeting Controversy

War Secretary Pete Hegseth has rejected comments from former general Ben Hodges, who made a controversial comparison between an upcoming meeting of Virginia’s military leaders and historical loyalty tests from Nazi Germany.

In a post on X, Hodges, the former commander of the US Army, suggested that the upcoming conference at Quantico echoes a 1935 event in which German generals were compelled to renounce their oaths to the Weimar Constitution and instead pledge loyalty to Hitler.

“In July 1935, the German general was invited to a surprise assembly in Berlin, where he learned his previous oath was no longer valid and needed to swear a personal oath to the Führer,” Hodges stated. “Most generals chose to take this new oath to maintain their positions.”

Hegseth addressed this notion with a brief and dismissive comment: “Cool story, general.”

Recently, President Donald Trump described the meeting as a positive gathering of generals and military leaders, stating, “it’s great that the generals and top people want to come to the US.” Vice President JD Vance indicated that such meetings shouldn’t be labeled as unusual and criticized the media for exaggerating the story.

While Hegseth and others have mocked the intense reactions to the meeting, the specific goals of the conference remain unclear. This uncertainty has sparked a variety of theories across media and among online partisans.

The Trump administration is no stranger to accusations of Nazi comparisons from left-wing critics, particularly in light of recent violent incidents linked to political extremism, such as the shooting of Charlie Kirk and violence at ICE offices in Dallas.

The Pentagon has postponed a formal statement regarding the meeting, leaving many questions unanswered.
