Serena Williams Showcases Cotton Artwork and Reflects on Its Symbolism

Serena Williams recently shared her appreciation for cotton artwork at her Florida residence, even taking the time to contact her hotel in New York City to highlight her cotton plant decorations.

At her mansion situated north of Miami, Williams and her husband, Alexis O’Hanian, proudly display a sculpture by Radcliffe Bailey, made in 2013 by the acclaimed artist, titled “Monument for a Promise.”

This striking piece, composed of steel and concrete, features a donkey carrying a trunk and is set atop a mound of cotton.

The art outlet highlighted Bailey’s ability to “assemble influential works” over the course of his career, utilizing items that explore the lineage of black history.

“His family archives, Georgian Red Clay, tarp, and various African figurines were just some of the components he incorporated into his artistry, often seen in monumental sculptures,” the outlet observed following Bailey’s passing in November 2023.

Reflecting on her home, Williams, who is 44, mentioned her excitement about displaying the “Promised Monument” sculpture in her foyer and formal living room back in February 2021. She described the space as a colorful artistic sanctuary filled with unique pieces.

“Entering feels like walking into an art gallery,” Williams expressed. “It’s honestly my favorite part of the house. It’s so unique—nothing like I’ve encountered before.”

O’Hanian, who is 42 and co-founder of Reddit, also shared a moment on Instagram featuring their daughter, Olympia, gazing up at the sculpture.

Fast forward almost five years, and Williams took to her Instagram story from an unspecified hotel in Manhattan, showing cotton plant decorations arranged at the entrance.

In a candid moment, she asked her followers, “How do you feel about cotton as an ornament?” While admiring the setup, she confessed, “Personally, it doesn’t feel good for me.”

As she picked a cotton ball from the branches, she remarked, “It feels like cotton, kind of like a manicure remover.”
