ICE agent captured pushing immigrant in viral NYC federal court video no longer on duty as Mamdani promises to oppose Trump enforcement.

ICE agents faced disciplinary action after an incident where an immigrant was forcibly handled in a Manhattan federal courtroom. Officials from the Trump administration asserted on Friday that Zorran Mamdani, a leading mayoral candidate, would confront such “terror.”

A distraught woman from Ecuador confronted an ICE officer at 26 Federal Plaza on Thursday following her husband’s arrest. She pleaded with him, but he responded by pushing her to the ground, an action that ignited outrage among progressives and prompted backlash against the Trump administration.

“What the officer did in that video is unacceptable and not representative of our ICE personnel,” said Tricia McLaughlin, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. “Our ICE agencies adhere to stringent occupational standards, and this officer has been relieved of duty pending a thorough investigation.”

The announcement came just before Mamdani held a press conference condemning the actions and criticizing the silence surrounding this controversial immigrant arrest, particularly during an asylum hearing. He also called out rivals Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Eric Adams regarding ICE operations in New York City.

Mamdani, who is the first immigrant to potentially serve as New York City’s mayor in over a century, expressed relief that the ICE agent had been suspended. However, he emphasized that such incidents occur daily across the nation, often going unnoticed and resulting in deep cruelty.

Mamdani hinted at a broader issue, saying that rhetoric aimed at immigration agents has led to violence against immigrants. He criticized Adams for not speaking out against these abuses.

“Leadership requires communicating to New Yorkers that these actions are unacceptable. Yet, we have seen the current mayor completely avoid this responsibility, despite having a significant platform to address it,” he noted.

Todd Shapiro, a spokesman for Adams’ campaign, remarked that the mayor is committed to addressing issues in immigration courts, especially concerning the alarming video of the officer’s actions. However, Shapiro accused Mamdani of lacking substantial contributions to immigrant welfare during his time as a state legislator.

Shapiro claimed that Adams has done more for immigration, including resource expansion and crime reduction, while criticizing Mamdani’s record as just rhetoric without action.

Cuomo’s spokesperson, Rich Azopaldi, pointed out that unlike Mamdani, Cuomo has consistently condemned ICE’s overreach and has enacted measures limiting New York’s cooperation with non-criminal immigration matters.

Ally Bradlander and Rep. Dan Goldman have called for felony charges against the involved ICE agents and supported Mamdani’s stance that those who violate the law should be held accountable. “Everyone should be governed by the same laws,” he argued. “You can’t have a separate system for those enforcing these laws.”
