High Morale Among ICE Agents Despite Recent Shooting Incident
During the Trump administration, ICE agents report that morale is actually quite high. To gain insight into their operations, Fox News Digital accompanied agents in Dallas and Houston to see their work and understand their mission.
“We operate under a government that has our back,” said an anonymous Assistant Field Office Director in Dallas.
The Dallas ride-along occurred on September 23. The day after, a gunman attacked the ICE field office in the city, resulting in tragic outcomes.
Reports indicate that at least three individuals lost their lives during the shooting at the ICE facility in Dallas, with one confirmed fatality.
The FBI is treating this incident as a “targeted attack” against ICE. Sources within the investigation have identified the suspect as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn. Preliminary findings from the FBI revealed anti-ICE messages and ammunition found near the shooter.
This shooting reportedly happened while ICE officers were transporting detainees to the facility. Following the attack, the shooter died from self-inflicted injuries. All three victims were detained individuals, with one losing their life.
The timeline of the attack suggests that the shooter aimed to create “real fear.”
Dallas agents highlighted that their role is often misunderstood, especially when encounters are shared on social media without the necessary context.
“We face numerous challenges because of social media, where we can target and arrest individuals, and then have to return to the streets for further arrests,” an agent explained.
The primary focus of ICE, they emphasized, is community safety, particularly targeting individuals with criminal backgrounds.
The Houston ride-along occurred on September 12. Tom Persad, acting assistant field office director for Houston, stated, “Our top priority is to remove criminals from the country.”
He also commented on the scrutiny that the agency faces from the public and social media, which seems more intense than during previous administrations.
Morale remains high under the Trump administration, according to Persad, as officers can concentrate on “enforcing our immigration laws.”
“There’s definitely a different atmosphere in the office… It’s felt by everyone involved, from the arresting officers to those managing detainees and handling cases throughout the removal process,” he added.
Persad detailed that the focus of their daily arrests includes serious offenses like child pornography, drug dealing, gang affiliations, and known or suspected terrorists, as well as individuals with significant criminal records.
In the aftermath of the shooting, DHS Chief Christa Noem voiced her concerns.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt pointed out that the shooting suspect used an app that indicated the location of ICE agents, labeling the media for giving such apps “irresponsible” and “free promotion.”
She further criticized the media, suggesting that they were exacerbating threats and violence against ICE.
FBI Director Kash Patel noted that the shooter had downloaded a document related to local security, which included a list of DHS facilities. “The evidence collected suggests a calculated pre-attack strategy,” he stated.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott characterized the shooting as an “assassination,” affirming strong support for ICE and maintaining that current operations would not be hindered. Abbott ensured that both the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas State Guard were collaborating closely with ICE to investigate the motives behind the attack.
