Bill Maher Calls for Shift in Democratic Ideology
On the recent episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the host suggested that Democrats might need to dial back their progressive stance to reconnect with what he referred to as “Old America.”
Maher emphasized, “If we’re going to go back to old America, it has to become part of a Democrat bargain. Stop coming up with fundamentally new, often awful ideas, and in the next breath, insist that there’s no discussion about it.”
He began by critiquing Democrats’ support for allowing men to compete in women’s sports, noting, “There are a lot of that on the left.”
Throughout the segment, Maher expressed concerns that certain issues were tarnishing the Democratic Party’s image. He referenced matters such as children’s self-diagnosis without age guidelines, broad asylum claims, and the perception that homelessness is, somehow, a lifestyle choice.
Another point he highlighted was how some dismiss discussions with conservatives, labeling them as “bad, stupid, deplorable.” Maher insisted that dismissing differing viewpoints is not constructive, citing statements like “Mathematics is racist” and “Looting is cool” as examples of ideas that don’t help the party’s cause.
Maher remarked that the Democrats should reconsider their “smug-good self-righteous” attitude, calling it a poor strategy for gaining voter support.
He warned liberal viewers that if they continue promoting radical progressive policies, they may find their power threatened. “Democrats can win every election forever, but those holding power won’t return it if you think you’re still a nut,” he asserted.
