Michigan High School Football Player Visits Team After Injury
Colton Mims, a 15-year-old player from Lakeshore High School in Michigan, recently visited his teammates in a wheelchair after suffering a serious injury—his spine was broken during a game. This unfortunate incident occurred when a player from Kalamazoo Central High School collided with him.
Colton’s mother, Courtney Mims, discussed his condition, noting that he is dealing with two “slight fractures.” She expressed her pride in her son on Facebook, saying, “This is my first time winning the field since!!! It’s my big baby! He’s an angel. His teammates are the best example of a young man I’ve seen in a long time.”
Colton was injured last Thursday in a tackle while playing against Kalamazoo Central. The Michigan High School Athletics Association (MHSAA) has responded to the incident and is taking matters seriously, stating they are in discussions with both schools involved.
“Our staff has been talking to both schools since Friday,” an MHSAA spokesperson said. “Kalamazoo Central has taken this issue very seriously and they have taken strong and decisive actions.” They emphasized that while they can’t disclose specific disciplinary actions due to privacy laws, they are taking the necessary steps beyond the typical regulations for dangerous or unsportsmanlike behavior.
Kalamazoo Public Schools also addressed the situation, describing the actions during the game as terrible behavior from individual students. They affirmed that such conduct does not align with the values of sportsmanship, respect, and integrity that are expected from all participants in the school community.
