Bill Maher Highlights Ignored Violence Against Christians in Nigeria
On a recent episode of “Real Time,” host Bill Maher discussed the ongoing violence faced by Nigerian Christians, asserting that it has been largely overlooked because “the Jews are not involved.” His comments came during a conversation with Rep. Nancy Mace, who acknowledged that the media has largely failed to highlight this issue.
Maher pointedly remarked, “Well, the Jews aren’t involved. That’s why. It’s Christians and Muslims—who cares?” He emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that groups like Boko Haram are actively trying to “wipe out the Christian population” in Nigeria.
He mentioned that more than 100,000 Christians have been killed since 2009 and that 18,000 churches have been burned, characterizing this situation as resembling a genocide attempt. In fact, he claimed it is more serious than the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Maher expressed frustration that the tragedy in Nigeria isn’t receiving the coverage he believes it deserves, stating, “If you don’t know what’s going on in Nigeria, your media sources will suck.” He further criticized those living in “the bubble” of mainstream news, suggesting they’re missing crucial stories.
According to UK Open Door, a global charity focused on defending Christians, jihadist violence has resulted in approximately 150,000 deaths over the past decade. Additionally, over 16 million Christians have been displaced in the region.
Nigeria has been labeled one of the most dangerous countries globally for Christians, with research indicating higher mortality rates due to their faith compared to other regions.
The White House has previously collaborated with the State Department to explore strategies aimed at curbing the violence and restoring stability in the area.
