Trump to Meet with Congressional Leaders Amid Shutdown Concerns

President Donald Trump is set to meet with leaders from both the Republican and Democratic parties on Monday, as concerns about a potential government shutdown loom large.

This meeting comes in the wake of Trump canceling a prior meeting with Democratic leaders last week. The Democrats claimed that the demands presented were “unsafe and ridiculous.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are slated to meet with Trump on Thursday to brainstorm strategies to avert partial government shutdowns ahead of the September 30 deadline.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader John Tune are also expected to be in attendance. Schumer and Jeffries released a joint statement expressing their willingness to negotiate anytime and anywhere to secure a bipartisan spending agreement that serves the American people. They emphasized their commitment to preventing government shutdowns as well as addressing the healthcare crisis.

The Senate is expected to reconvene on September 29, after the Jewish New Year, while the House will likely take a break until the funding deadline approaches.

Trump recently took to Truth Social to criticize Schumer and Jeffries, asserting that they are pushing a “radical left policy” that lacks public support.

The now-canceled meeting with Trump followed a letter from Schumer and Jeffries, highlighting the urgency of addressing potential government issues. Congressional Democrats have suggested that any short-term funding extensions backed by Trump would perpetuate partisan policies and harm healthcare funding, risking the closure of hospitals across the nation.

As the September 30 deadline nears, Democrats have warned that Republicans could be liable for another government shutdown, primarily because of their refusal to engage in discussions.

Trump countered that their proposal could potentially enable him to eliminate cuts to Medicaid in his large-scale spending bill, also criticizing the Democrats’ continued resolution which jeopardizes a significant local hospital funding source.

He stated, “We must keep our government open and legislate like true patriots, rather than holding American citizens hostage.”

The urgency heightens as the shutdown would take effect on Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. ET without an agreement.

Johnson mentioned that he had encouraged Trump to cancel last Thursday’s meeting, suggesting that it would be more beneficial after the Congressional leaders had completed their responsibilities regarding government operations.

“Of course, at that point, it might be productive, but for now, it’s a waste of his time,” Johnson added.
