Cameron Young Shines in Ryder Cup Debut
Friday wasn’t just another day—it was significant. Especially for Cameron Young, who hails from Westchester County.
After contributing to Team USA’s success in the four-ball matches, Young kept his spot in the Four Sam lineup for Saturday morning. He teamed up with Matt Fitzpatrick and Bryson DeChambeau to secure a 4&2 victory over Rudig.
This marked Young as the first Team USA player to win his initial two matches while earning at least four points, a feat last achieved by Patrick Reed in 2014.
Notably, three previous American legends—Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, and Ted Kroll—also won their first three Ryder Cup matches by a margin of at least four holes.
“This is what you dream of,” Young expressed after the morning session.
While it was uncertain if the 28-year-old would even be on the roster this year, his excellent summer performance earned him a spot as one of Captain Keegan Bradley’s rookies.
In a sense, he was a wild card, even though he was quite familiar with the Bethpage course.
Young maintained his impressive form right from the first hole on Saturday, landing his second shot just 11 inches from the pin. He took the lead with a key putt on the third hole and regained advantage on the seventh, with his tee shot on a par 3 landing just feet from the hole.
“Cam played incredible today,” said DeChambeau.
Young has quickly become Team USA’s standout player this weekend, especially as Scotty Scheffler struggled and team dynamics shifted.
His rise to prominence is impressive, given his background from Scarborough and his roots at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club, where he even once held the course record at Bethpage Black (64 from the 2017 New York State Open).
Finally getting his shot at the Ryder Cup took some time, but he has swiftly become an essential part of the team.
“He was ready for this,” his mother, Barbara, shared with a local reporter on Saturday. “I knew he would play well.”
