During Saturday night’s game against Oregon, many football fans in Pennsylvania donned Charlie Kirk’s “free” t-shirts.
Images and videos of students sporting the shirts circulated widely on social media.
Oregon, which is Kirk’s favorite college football team, ultimately won the nail-biter, finishing 30-24. The victory was sealed by a crucial interception in overtime by defensive back Dylanteen Man, celebrated by the crowd sporting Kirk’s signature attire.
Conservative influencer Benny Johnson organized an event where 5,000 shirts were distributed to fans in the Beaver Stadium parking lot prior to the game.
Early Saturday, Johnson posted video showing a long line of fans eagerly waiting for their shirts, stretching across multiple sections of the parking area while cheers erupted from the crowd.
At one point, a loud chant of “America!” filled the air.
Turning Point USA (TPUSA) announced its initiative to distribute the shirts at the Oregon vs. Pennsylvania matchup held at Beaver Stadium.
Kirk had worn the iconic shirt on September 10th, just before a tragic incident where a shooting claimed the lives of a 31-year-old man and two fathers, causing national grief. TPUSA committed to continue the work Kirk had passionately pursued.
“To honor Charlie Kirk, we’re going to fight cultural battles that matter to him—especially in college football,” Johnson stated. He highlighted the significance of the game, mentioning that Charlie Kirk would have been there, as he had a deep love for Oregon, alongside passionate supporters from Pennsylvania.
Johnson reminisced about wearing the same “freedom” shirt that Kirk had on when he was killed, emphasizing the importance of the game which had a special “whiteout” theme.
Since Kirk’s tragic passing, he has been acknowledged at several major football events. Oregon’s head coach, Dan Lanning, had previously expressed his condolences to Kirk’s wife, Erika, and their children after a recent victory.
Lanning also addressed the broader cultural issues in the country, urging individuals to glean insights from locker room dynamics, where players of various backgrounds come together. He emphasized the need for understanding and unity.
Reflecting on Kirk’s fandom, Lanning mentioned, “I didn’t know he was an Oregon fan, and it saddens me for his family. Such violence shouldn’t exist in our society.” He pointed out the everyday violence affecting children in schools and communities, expressing a sense of loss regarding what life should represent.
