Florida father wrongly imprisoned misses the birth of his second child in a startling case of mistaken identity

A father in Florida ended up missing the birth of his second child after a misunderstanding led to him being wrongfully imprisoned for two weeks.

Samuel Vazquez, a 29-year-old from Jacksonville, was eagerly anticipating the arrival of his daughter. But on September 12th, he was arrested for assault and taken to the Duval County Jail.

Things took a turn when he was mistakenly transferred to Polk County, about 200 miles away, for a crime he had never committed, all in a place he didn’t know.

Ironically, Samuel Vazquez, 41, who actually allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend’s dog outside a grocery store in Polk County, was not in custody.

The unfortunate situation stemmed from a mere letter difference in their names, which led to a mix-up that saw his father locked up for nearly two weeks while pleading his innocence.

Aside from their last names, they had virtually nothing else in common – age, birthday, height, weight, everything was different.

Vazquez spent 13 days in jail before attorneys could clarify the mix-up and show that authorities had the wrong person.

“An innocent man has been arrested. An innocent man has gone to prison. Twenty-five years later, I have never seen a much more sloppy investigation than this,” a lawyer commented.

Compounding the issue, grocery store security footage was said to have shown the real offender, yet law enforcement seemed convinced they had the right individual.

Interestingly, Vazquez had no prior criminal record, although he was reportedly on probation following an incident with a past partner.

“Law enforcement just needed to look at the real suspect’s face and compare it with the person in custody. They likely would’ve realized they had the wrong guy,” the lawyer observed.

This lawyer took action that officers apparently overlooked: he visited Vazquez and showed a recent mug shot of the real suspect.

After this, all charges against Vazquez were promptly dropped, and he was released. Shortly afterward, other individuals with the last name Vasquez were arrested in Charlotte County, now awaiting extradition to Polk County, according to jail records.

The post reached out to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for comments regarding the initial arrest.
