New Jersey Republicans Call for Release of Mikie Sherrill’s Military Records
Three Republican representatives from New Jersey, Christopher Smith, Jeff Van Drew, and Tom Kean Jr., are urging Democratic candidate Rep. Mikie Sherrill to release her military records. This request comes in light of a significant fraud scandal that shook the U.S. Naval Academy in 1994.
The three legislators stated that Sherrill should “publish all of her academic, disciplinary, and investigative records” for transparency’s sake. They mentioned that it’s puzzling why she hasn’t disclosed these records, especially if they align with her current narrative.
In New Jersey, one of the two gubernatorial races this year is particularly heated, especially after new revelations of the Naval Academy’s involvement in this long-standing scandal.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli has frequently called for Sherrill to address these allegations, noting that she has claimed she did nothing wrong in connection with this issue. He mentioned her military career and addressed her lack of experience as a helicopter pilot post-graduation from the Naval Academy.
There’s an underlying tension, as recent reports indicate that the National Personnel Records Center mistakenly released altered military files related to Sherrill. This incident has prompted prominent Democrats to demand a thorough investigation.
Sherrill, who previously served as a federal prosecutor before her congressional career, expressed her discontent over the situation, emphasizing the seriousness of illegal access to one’s records. In a letter, the National Archives acknowledged the error, attributing it to a government employee’s mishap.
As the candidates prepare for another debate, the race against the incumbent Governor Phil Murphy is heating up. Ciattarelli is making his third attempt for the governorship. With a background as a former state legislator and a certified public accountant, he aims to capitalize on the current political climate to secure a victory.
