White House Offers Apology to Qatar Following Israeli Strikes
On Monday, the White House extended an apology to Qatar after Israeli military actions during a meeting involving President Donald Trump. The strikes specifically targeted senior Hamas leaders in Qatar, which inadvertently resulted in the deaths of Qatari security personnel.
Trump expressed his disapproval of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to conduct such operations in the region, suggesting that these actions do not further the interests of Israel or the United States.
As a significant mediator in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, Qatar hosts around 10,000 American troops on its soil. Following the incident, during a call with Hamad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Netanyahu expressed regret over the unintended loss of life and acknowledged Israel’s breach of Qatari sovereignty during the attack. He assured that similar actions would not be repeated.
The discussions between the leaders seemed constructive. Trump later described them as heartfelt, emphasizing the value of their conversation at a press conference. They agreed on establishing a formal trilateral framework to enhance security cooperation and clear up misunderstandings, aiming to reduce future tensions.
In this context, Trump praised Qatar’s leader as a notable peace facilitator and underscored Qatar’s aspirations to integrate into the Abraham Accords—an initiative designed to normalize relations between several Middle Eastern nations and Israel, which he championed during his presidency.
Trump also introduced a 20-point peace plan intended to resolve the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This proposal suggests amnesty for Hamas members willing to disarm for peace, aims to transform Gaza into a safer region, and calls for Israel to withdraw its military presence.
The terms specify that Hamas must release remaining hostages—whether alive or deceased—within 72 hours of agreement acceptance, while Israel, in return, would free a significant number of Palestinian prisoners. Furthermore, individuals from Hamas committed to peaceful coexistence would receive pardons and options for safe passage out of Gaza.
Despite these developments, Hamas has yet to agree to the proposed plan, and Trump has stated that failure to comply could result in further violence. He reiterated his full support for Israel to eliminate the threat posed by Hamas decisively.
