Government Shutdown Possibility and Political Reactions
Brit Hume, the chief political analyst at Fox News, commented on Monday that Democrats might show unexpected responsibility if the federal government shuts down.
The potential closure will happen if lawmakers don’t reach an agreement on funding by midnight on September 30th, as discussed on “Special Report with Brett Baier.”
“Well, Brett, let’s consider a few things. First, a complete government shutdown doesn’t mean everything halts. Essential functions will still operate as needed, but history shows that when this occurs, Republicans often face the blame,” Hume noted.
He described House Republicans’ proposal as a “cleaning bill.”
“What Republicans have put forward is a temporary, unaltered measure that maintains current spending levels and leads us to the next significant decision point. However, Democrats are looking to attach additional demands,” he added.
Democrats returned to Washington on Monday, aiming to avert a shutdown even as they supported a temporary funding bill backed by the GOP. Meanwhile, President Trump and Congressional leaders made one last effort to negotiate on Monday, but those discussions ended without reaching a consensus.
Democrats are holding firm on their demand for medical funding concessions, while Republicans advocate for straightforward funding extensions. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has urged Democrats to push for roughly $1.5 trillion in Obamacare and Medicaid funding in return for their support, a proposal that has not been well received by Republicans.
