Resolute Schumer Believes Most Americans Will Urge Trump To Conclude Shutdown

Schumer Says Republicans Will Face Pressure to Prevent Shutdowns

On Tuesday, Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer remarked that Republicans will soon encounter significant public pressure to put an end to government shutdowns.

With government funding set to expire at 12:01 AM on Wednesday, Schumer highlighted the urgency for Democrats to approve a House-passed stopgap plan, which would keep operations running until November 21st. He accused President Donald Trump and Republican leaders of orchestrating the shutdowns.

“They control the situation. It’s their shutdown,” Schumer stated. He suggested that the political fallout would not favor them. “Trump acknowledged it. It’s not beneficial for anyone or for the country. This issue deserves our attention, and I hope Republicans steer clear of a shutdown.”

Schumer criticized Republicans for allowing the government to inch closer to closure by delaying negotiations until the last moment.

“If they proceed with a shutdown, it’s because they waited until the very end to engage with us,” he noted.

He also mentioned that Democrats are committed to holding Republicans accountable for their handling of ongoing healthcare issues, which continue to deteriorate.

“I told Trump just yesterday that he could easily reach out to Thune and Johnson to make the necessary adjustments to the bill,” Schumer remarked.

Democrats are linking their support for a temporary funding measure to the preservation of expanded Obamacare subsidies, arguing that Republicans are attempting to undermine healthcare access for regular Americans. Although Trump met with Congressional leaders on Monday, no agreement was reached. Democrats were seeking healthcare concessions while Republicans insisted on passing a straightforward funding bill.

Recently, Trump canceled a meeting with senior Democrats, dismissing their demands as “indifferent and ridiculous.” The deadlock continues as the House advances a minor GOP suspension measure, with Senate Republicans requiring Democratic votes to meet the 60-vote threshold.
