Trump’s “2028” Hat Takes Center Stage During Government Shutdown Talks
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump shared an image on his Truth Social account, featuring his red “Trump 2028” hat prominently on a desk during a meeting with Democratic leaders in the Oval Office. This meeting, held on Monday, aimed to find ways to avert a government shutdown.
Trump’s post came just hours before Washington faced its first potential shutdown since 2018-19.
“The Trump administration seeks a simple, straightforward continuing resolution,” stated White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson. She criticized Democrats, claiming they were willing to shut down the government over an excessive $1.5 trillion wish list that included free healthcare for undocumented immigrants. According to her, this radical agenda was rejected by voters last year.
Senator JD Vance expressed concern following the meeting, suggesting that a shutdown was likely. Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer pointed out significant differences in the negotiation approaches.
As the clock approached midnight on October 1st, the Senate failed to pass a crucial funding extension, inching closer to a government closure.
Trump’s picture, shared late Tuesday, featured the “Trump 2028” hat and marked a notable moment just before the expected disruptions began. His campaign has been selling this hat since earlier this year.
Democratic leaders responded to Trump’s photo op with skepticism. Schumer remarked that Trump has the power to prevent a shutdown if he decides to, though he did not elaborate on specific actions.
Historically, Trump oversaw a 35-day government shutdown from late 2018 to early 2019—the longest in U.S. history—raising the stakes for the upcoming negotiations.
