Red Bulls’ Playoff Streak Ends
The North American professional sports playoff record held by the Red Bulls has come to an end.
On Tuesday night, the team was eliminated from playoff contention after the Chicago Fire defeated Inter Miami 5-3. This result marks the end of a 15-year postseason streak, making the last two matches of the season feel rather meaningless.
Earlier in the week, the Red Bulls had fallen to their playoff rival, New York City FC, leaving them with a slim chance. They needed the Fire to win, but that hope faded quickly.
Interestingly, the last time the Red Bulls missed the playoffs was in 2009, the year after they reached the MLS Cup final.
Last season had raised expectations for this year’s squad, especially following their surprising run to the championship game.
“I understand everyone is disappointed about not making the playoffs. Trust me, I’m disappointed too,” said Red Bulls coach Sandro Schwartz after the loss to NYCFC. “With a few injuries, it’s been tough… The current situation isn’t my biggest surprise, but we’re pushing until the end.”
It seems the Red Bulls couldn’t replicate the success of 2024. Injuries have plagued the team, notably the absence of star player Lewis Morgan, who has been sidelined since June with a quad injury.
Despite the evident need for reinforcements during the summer transfer window, the club didn’t make any significant moves. They were linked to Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, but the deal never materialized.
Now, they have one last chance at home against Cincinnati on Saturday before finishing the season on the road in Columbus.
