Red Sox Facing Tough Decisions Ahead
The Red Sox find themselves in a difficult position this season.
CEO Sam Kennedy stated on Wednesday that, despite the initial high hopes for the year, a sale could be on the table by the August 3 trade deadline if performance doesn’t improve swiftly. “It’s tough. We usually don’t end up in this kind of spot, but when it happens, as with any trade deadline, you must prioritize the organization’s best interests,” he mentioned during an interview with NESN. “We need to focus on what’s good for the organization—not for the players, the front office, or the executives. If it comes to that, it’s what we’d have to consider.”
He added, “It’s really painful and hard to believe given the expectations. That’s what’s made these early months so challenging—everyone expected more from us.”
Kennedy’s remarks come just days after he appeared on “The Greg Hill Show,” where he was candid about the team’s poor record of 27-39.
“Honestly, unless there’s a significant turnaround, we might have to adjust our original plans,” he also explained then. “We don’t owe anything to anyone else. But as we reach mid-June, we need to monitor how things unfold in the coming weeks and reassess from there.”
The Red Sox had made the playoffs in 2025 and entered 2026 looking to bounce back. However, after their latest loss to the Blue Jays, the situation looks increasingly grim, as they sit at the bottom of the American League East with only 29 wins and 43 losses.
The team ranks last in the league for runs scored and 21st in total hits, and they have also allowed the second-most walks. Their on-base percentage is just .314, also putting them at 21st.
Caleb Durbin, who batted over .250 with the Brewers in 2025, is now struggling below .200. Similarly, Jalen Duran, who had a .256 average last year, now sits at .213. Trevor Story is far below expectations with a disappointing .206 average, nearing a career low.
The pitching staff hasn’t helped matters, either. Brayan Bello has been sent down to Triple-A, while Garrett Crochet, who has been sidelined since April 25, posted an ERA of 6.30 during his time on the mound.
Coach Alex Cora was let go after a 10-17 start on April 26, but things didn’t improve much, as the team continued to struggle with a record of 19-25.
As of Thursday, the Red Sox are 5.5 games away from the third wild-card spot in the American League, with more than half the season left to play. However, they would need to leapfrog five teams to secure that position, making the idea of a sale increasingly plausible.
